Queen Elizabeth’s longtime dresser, Angela Kelly, reveals personal stories about the monarch in her new memoir about her time working with her majesty.

One tale involves an April Fool’s Prank during a visit to Australia. Kelly purchased a stuffed kookaburra bird and placed it on Elizabeth’s balcony. Then when the animal loving royal spotted it, pretended it was dead. She says the 93-year-old ruler still keeps the toy in her sitting room today.

Another time, Angela almost missed her flight home from Singapore. Because she was rushing through the airport trying to claim tax back on some of her majesty’s purchases, as the Queen is famously thrifty.

And Kelly gave some details of her work recreating the royal christening gown. The original, from 1841, was declared too fragile to use in 2004. And Angela was tasked with making an exact replica. The job took nine months, including a flight to Italy to find the perfect lace. Since then all the children of Princes William and Harry have worn it.
