Although it’s a sunny destination, we will not be visiting a tropical locale or an exotic place to hang out. Nope, in the southwestern part of California we find this place to be… Orange County.
To the general public, the county is known for tourism thanks to attractions like Disneyland and the numerous popular beaches along its more than 40 kilometers of coastline. To A-listers of course Orange County is known as the home of their many upper class friends, who reside there in one spectacular abode after another. In fact, as far as celebrities per-square-mile go, Orange County offers more sightings than a Hollywood movie premiere.
When celebrity spotting is your thing, a ride past their many lavish homes in Orange County should be very worthwhile if you’re in the – probably gated – neighborhood. Diane Keaton, Kevin Costner, James Cameron and Tiger Woods are among the many A-listers who’ve all lived in Orange County at least a part of their glamorous lives.
Back when he was still a wealthy man, Nicolas Cage purchased a superlunary mansion along Bayshore Drive overlooking Newport Bay for an outrageous 25 million dollars. And he even managed to sell it at a sweet profit a few years later for 35 million, at that time an absolute record sale in the OC.
The Victoria Beach area is renowned for its beautiful stretches of sand, fascinating tide pools and its abandoned Victorian style tower. Actress and singer Bette Midler once owned the landmark beach cottage, and the accompanying tower, La Tour, which is also known to many as the pirate tower. It’s surrounded by dramatic rock formations and towering bluffs and offers an impressive view out over the Pacific Ocean.
With all the stars parading up and down around Orange County, it probably comes as no surprise that the coast is where they tend to gravitate. There’s a long line of trendy Laguna Beach restaurants and night clubs that have been a starlet hot spot since the late 90s and show no sign of slowing down.
Like Mosun, where the stars go for sushi, sake and clubbing. Mosun has long been a rendezvous spot for secret celebrity romances, including Heather Locklear and David Spade or LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian.
Then there’s Detroit Bar, which offers something most L.A. establishments can’t: anonymity. Celebs won’t find paparazzi waiting at the entrance or cameramen hiding by the valet. Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale and Shia LeBoeuf all frequent the space to hear live indie-rock, shoot a game of pool and enjoy the tasty libations.
When there’s some serious shopping that needs to be done there are plenty of places in Orange County where the wealthy few go. But where they go when they want to do this without being noticed is South Coast Plaza. The place is teeming with fine luxury retailers, and you’ll find numerous jet setters hobnobbing with the commoners while spending money. Those that have slipped in and out of this shopping mecca over the years include Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Clearly, the roster of high end A-listers living and visiting this elegant part of California is impressive indeed. So should you ever plan to go on a celeb spotting safari, we suggest you visit Orange County!
