A North Carolina woman used her toes to call 911 after her hands were crushed by her car on Sunday.

The 54-year-old woman, who local authorities have not publicly identified, was forced to use “some innovative thinking” after her hands were trapped while she tried to swap out a flat tire, Colleton County Fire-Rescue officials wrote in a statement.

The accident occurred around 7 p.m. after the woman pulled over on a dark portion of Interstate 95, officials said.

She had managed to replace the flat tire with a spare when the jack suddenly slipped, bringing the car down on her hands. They were stuck between the tire and the fender, officials said.

Alone on the side of the road and in “excruciating pain,” the woman spent 35 minutes trying to slide her shoe off her foot so she could “manipulate her cell” with her toes, according to fire officials. It took several attempts, but the woman managed to dial 911 and inform dispatchers of her condition.

First responders were on the scene about eight minutes later. They used a pry bar to free one hand and a hydraulic lift for the other.

All told, the woman spent about 45 minutes pinned beneath the car, and “suffered severe damage to both hands and all fingers,” according to the statement. She was transported to a local trauma center for further care.
