Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, an 18-year-old boxer from Mexico, has died from injuries she sustained in bout less than a week ago in a Montreal ring, the event’s promoter said.
Groupe Yvon Michel announced that Zapata died Thursday. She fought Marie-Pier Houle of Canada in a welterweight match at the GYM Gala International Boxing event Saturday night at IGA Stadium.
The referee stopped the bout in the fourth round as Zapata convulsed in one of the corners. She was unconscious for several minutes and taken to a local hospital.
“The entire team at Groupe Yvon Michel is extremely distressed by this painful announcement,” the promoter said in a news release.
“We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to her family, loved ones, friends, and especially her husband, Jovanni Martinez, who was at her bedside until her last moments.”
Michel delivered a barrage of punches to Zapata in a six-round bout. She landed a left uppercut and a right hook to end the series of hits.
Zapata struggled the recover from the impact and could not return to her corner. She left the ring on a stretcher. She was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
Groupe Yvon Michel said Sunday that Zapata was placed in a medically induced coma.
Houle, 31, posted several messages on Facebook about the incident. She wrote Sunday that she was “really upset” by the scene and didn’t intend to seriously hurt Zapata.
She wrote Thursday that she was “devastated” by the news of Zapata’s death.
“The sad news of the departure of a great athlete like Jeanette Zacarias Zapata leaves me sad and devastated,” Houle wrote.
“I offer my sincere and deep condolences to her family and husband Jovanni Martinez.”
Zapata also was knocked out in a fight on May 14 in Reynosa, Mexico. She won two of her first three career fights and finished with a record of 2-4.
A GoFundMe set up to help with Zapata’s recovery costs from the incident received donations of more than $15,000 as of Friday afternoon.
